What’s worth seeing in Huánuco?
Huánuco is a city in the northern-central part of Peru, the capital of the region of the same name, and it has relatively small – as for South America – number of citizens amounting to around 120 thousand. The city was founded in the valley of the river Huallaga. Climate in this region is considered to be one of the best in the Andes, as the sun shines there almost whole year around and the sky has intensive, blue colour.
In Huánuco there are located two universities, the public one - Universidad Nacional Hermilio Valdizán and the private - Universidad de Huánuco. Main source of revenue is agriculture with vegetables grown such as batatas, bean and potatoes, as well as delicious, exotic fruits like avocado, mango and papaya. If you like those and always wanted to try them in a place where they originally grow – the city is a perfect destination for you. You can get there by car or plane. Airport is located around 5 kilometres from the city and handles internal connections. Every day there are flights to the capital of the country, Lima.
If you are into football, you will definitely be interested in the fact that the city has two football clubs - Social Deportivo León de Huánuco and Alianza Universidad. There is also a stadium, Heraclio Tapia León, built in 1972 with the capacity of 25 thousand people. Apart from the stadium, the other characteristic building in Huánuco is the church of St. Sebastian, whose elevation is adorned with standing out, blue bricks.
What’s worth to taste while staying in that region? If you like beer, try its corn version – Chicha de jora, that is a bit sour and similar to cider. Other popular drink, that we recommend to try, is guarapo, a juice made out of sugar cane. Local snacks are also roasted figs, served with butter and dried meat. Taste also chicken soup, served with nuts and coriander – Inchicapi.
