São José do Rio Preto literary means Saint Joseph from the black river. Saint Joseph is the patron of the city, a Rio Preto – a name of a river, that flows closely, whose waters seemed to be black.
In July the city organizes the international theatre festival. Shows and experimental workshops take place not only in theatre, but also on streets and in urban parks.
The city at nights is vibrant. Among nightclubs stands out a bar Vila Dionísio, where thematic parties and gigs of known bands take place. It is always crowdy there!

What’s worth eating there? In São Paulo a typical dish is virado à paulista, made from rice, tutu de feijão (specially prepared beans), fried cabbage and pork. Popular is also obviously feijoada, known in the whole Brazil meat stew with black beans. Whereas pastéis is local fast food snack: fried on oil patty with a various filling – shrimps, minced meat and mozzarella, or with marmalade. The typical drink is juice from sugar cane. Where to eat?
