Huancayo is a city inhabited by almost half a million people, located at a dizzying altitude of 3300m a.s.l. between the Andes summits. In the green Mantaro Valley, the conditions are perfect not only for animal breeding and plant cultivation but also for high mountain trekking and exploring the local culture.
When you’re in Huancayo, don’t miss Cerrito de la Libertad – a viewpoint where you can dine at one of the restaurants or cafés and have a nice time. One kilometer from this place you may admire unique geological formations – sandstone towers shaped by erosion, called Torre-Torre. The city and valley panorama observed from this spot is breathtaking, so don’t forget to bring your camera! Also, Parque de la Identidad Huanca, the most popular park among locals, is worth a visit and taking a picture. You will see there some extraordinary buildings, monuments, and ornaments referring to the culture of the Huanca (Wanka) people who once inhabited this land.
If you want to buy some souvenirs, it’s best to do it on Sunday on the Feria Dominical market on Huancavelica Street. You’ll find a wide choice of crafts but also a selection of tropical fruits and stalls with food or freshly squeezed juice.
What local specialties should you try? Certainly, ceviche de trucha and trucha a la huancaina – the traditional salad with fish and seafood (in this case, the trout caught in the area) and a fried fish fillet. You may also like papa a la Huancaina – potatoes with hot yellow sauce. In this area, as well as in the whole Peru, dishes prepared from guinea pigs are served. Almost every restaurant has it on the menu (as picante de cuy and cuy chactado). In the city, you’ll find many restaurants, bars, and food stalls, with the most popular Detras de la Catedral, Huancahuasi Huancayo, La Tullpa, and La Lena.
