Situated in northern Jutland Aalborg is the fourth biggest town of Denmark. You won’t find there crowds, squeeze or rush characteristic for big metropolis. Though historic buildings are the majority, you can also find there pearls of modern architecture and the vibe of youth, as Aalborg is the university city. Located by the lovely Limfjord, it attracts with virgin nature and perfect local cuisine.
Aalborg, called by Danish also Ålborg, is the town situated in northern part of the country, in the region referred to as the land of light. Nothing strange in that – virgin sandy beaches and reflecting in waters of Limfjord ray of lights make this town oozing with beauty. The city itself is an example of connection of old with new. Despite the fact that in the 19th century, most of the Old Town was dismantled to make space for other buildings, you can still find for instance 17th century townhouses (among them house of Jens Bang or Jorgen Olufsen, the castle Aalborghus Slot from the16th century, the town hall from the 18th century and characteristic Lutheran church Budolfi.
Delighted in this place will also be lovers of modern architecture. In Aalborg was built, among others, the premises of Utzon center, designed by a famous Danish architect, that also designed the opera in Sydney. A geometrical and unusual shape of the House of Music (Mussikend Hus) is, on the other hand, the masterpiece of Coop Jimmelblau. It is also worth to see the building of museum of modern art (KUNSTEN Museum of Modern Art) from the 60’s of the 20th century. Its originator was famous Finnish architect Alvar Aalto.
Aalborg is known in Denmark as the capital of food for gourmets. Local dishes are based on traditional ingredients – blueberry, mushrooms, fishes and lamb or goat cheese. Must try are also local alcohols, for instance, produced since more than 170 years Aalborg Aquavit or craft beers from breweries Nibe Bryghus or Thisted Bryghus. In the town, it is especially worth to go to Søgaards Bryghus. In restaurant and inns (in Danish „kro”) on the shore of Limfjord, you can taste fresh fishes and famous oyster Limfjord as well as juicy lobsters.
