    Originally, the city was called Vardø Landdistrikt, as in the 19th century it was part of the town of the same name. In the 50’s of the 20th century, after gaining independence, it was called Båtsfjord.

    In this tiny town, whose surface isn’t more than 1500 square kilometres, there is situated the biggest mast in Norway, use for transporting TV signal.

What’s worth seeing in Båtsfjord?

Båtsfjord is a city and municipality, located in a region Finnmark, which is the biggest administrative area in Norway, situated in the northern east part of the country. It lies on the northern shore of a peninsula Varanger. The town is very tiny, inhabited by just a bit more than two thousand people, but despite this it is very well connected. By the town, an airport was opened, every day from local port set off ferries.

The town isn’t often visited by tourists, but it should be, as nature is fascinating there and isn’t giving its way to others, much more popular places in Norway. The northern part of the country is amazing, cities are in significant distance from each other, making for very calm vibe. You can see there marvellous plants and animals, among them reindeers, that in summer wander to the northern part of Finnmark.

Båtsfjord is a place made for you, if you are an enthusiastic angler! There is a reason that the town is one of the most important spots on the map of Norway, when it comes to industrial fishing. You can find there perfect conditions for fishing, both when leaving the coast to the open sea, as well as when fishing from the shores. 

The area is ideal for mountain trekking. Routes are outstandingly denominated, and they lead mainly through a few beautiful nature reservations. Make sure to visit Syltefjord, situated in the distance of around 30 kilometres from Båtsfjord. Cliffs over there are famous for their uniqueness, and local river is a home for many seals, as well as for marvellous, but predatory Erne.

Staying in Båtsfjord, make sure to visit nearby fisherman villages. One of the most popular villages is Hamningberg, in which to this day are preserved original houses and farm buildings, made entirely of wood. It is an extraordinary example of an old architecture, as most of it was destroyed during the Second World War. Today houses are used only in summer for accommodation.
