Clermont, one of the oldest French cities, that witnessed the most important events in the world's history. In 1630 Clermont was merged with a neighbouring town Montferrand.
One of the most amazing monuments of Clermont-Ferrand, seen almost from every place in the city, is the Cathedral of Assumption of Virgin Mary. The gothic cathedral was built entirely from black volcanic rocks. It is the only church in the whole France of such type. Impression is mainly made by black towers that have more than 96 metres of height.
Barely 15 km to the west from the city, there is an unusual thematic park located, entirely devoted to volcanos. Vulcanica lies on the area of extinct volcanic range. Each step is a great geology lesson. You will see there not only results of eruptions, but experience on yourself an earthquake. The last volcano eruption in that region took place around 8 thousand years ago, but scientist don't rule out the possibility of another one in near future.
Clermont-Ferrand is the city of theatre and music festivals. Each year a few important events took place there, that are worth attending. In May there is organized a huge feast – Europavox, during which for audience perform the best European musicians. In July and November on the other hand, hip-hop and rap reign in the city. The music event is accompanied by graffiti festivals. Whereas October is time for a jazz festival – Jazz en tête.
