A highly picturesque archipelago situated on the east from the shores of Brazil, is in fact a huge nature sanctuary. The archipelago consist of 21 islands and volcano rocks. The island Fernando de Noronha is the biggest of them. Though archipelago was discovered in first years of the 16th century by Portuguese, quickly the area was conquered by Englishmen, later French, Dutch and finally it returned to hands of Portuguese.
Portuguese has embattled the island only in the middle of the 18th century. In 1770 the first settlement was founded – Villa dos Remedios, with clearly seen division to tow part: the upper one with administrative buildings and the lower one with houses and a church. To this day preserved are the governor’s square, a temple with a two-coloured façade and a post office.
The archipelago is a paradise for scientists and amateurs of wild nature – live there two endemic species of birds. But lovers of flora will be disappointed. In the 19th century, when the prison was operating there, most of vegetations was cut out, so that fugitives wouldn’t hide in bushes. This resulted in extinction of many plants.
The real richness of nature can be observe by the water. Almost 70 percent of the area of the island has a status of marine national park. Since 2001 Fernando de Noronha has been on UNESCO World Heritage List. In this paradise for divers water is pleasantly warm. The island Fernando de Noronha isn’t a touristic resort with full gastronomy infrastructure and numerous monuments. It is a place that attracts with its nature. You can’t just fly in there. First you have to register in one of tourists agency that organizes trips to the island. Why? So that too many tourists won’t disturb the harmony that is reigning on the island. Expect from that, the resources of drinking water are quite small.
