What’s worth seeing in Grozny?

Named in 2003 by the UN delegates, the most devastated city in the world, Grozny is reborn after a war that had lasted for many years. Today, every year it attracts more and more tourists with modern architecture, the hospitality of residents, wonderful nature and excellent cuisine.

Grozny or Dżochar-Gala is a city in Russia, and at the same time the capital of its autonomous republic, that is Chechnya. In the 1990s, during the Chechen-Russian wars, aimed at including Chechnya into the Russian Federation, it was significantly destroyed. Today, thanks to Russian subsidies, it is reconstructed and changes its face, becoming a modern urban center. Among its main attractions, one should certainly mention the most important artery of the city, i.e. the Prospekt of Putin (formerly the Propekt of Pobieda) renovated in 2005, as well as a modern business and residential complex called Grozny City.

History enthusiasts should go outside the city, for example, to the Hoj stone settlement in the Viennese region, where the ruins of stone houses built without the use of mortar have been preserved, and also to the Uszkaloj village, where one can see the stone towers of Nakh peoples from the 12th century. Must see for nature lovers is Kiezienoj-Am, which is the largest and deepest lake of the North Caucasus located at an altitude of 1870 m above sea level, and also one of the most picturesque Caucasian gorges, i.e. Argan.

What dishes to taste while staying in Grozny? Due to the location in the mountains and the difficulty with access to fresh fruit and vegetables, the traditional Chechen cuisine is based mainly on pasta, meat, and cheese. Among the national delicacies, there is a Żubig Galnasz, meaning meat dumplings in garlic broth. Other local delicacies are siskal czurek (pancakes made from maize flour), zizig-czorpa (meat with tomatoes and potatoes), czepalgasz (bliny). Where to eat? It is worth looking for the bars where the residents of Grozny are sitting or choose one of the restaurants where you can order Chechen delicacies, for e.g. Nokhchiyn Kherch, Lesnaya Polyana and Cafe Maidan.
