Mytilene
Mytilene, on the eastern coast of the island of Lesbos, is the largest town on this Greek island. It has around 27,871 inhabitants and hosts the main campus of the University of the Aegean. In antiquity it was an important centre of Aeolian culture, known for the work of Sappho and Alcaeus. The city went through various periods of foreign rule, including by the Persians and Athens. Its Mediterranean climate brings mild winters and hot summers, and the best time to visit is the spring and autumn months.
