What’s worth seeing in Vinnytsia?

A city with abstruse history. Through years it had been under the Polish reign. Vinnytsia went through first big modernization at the beginning of the 17th century, when by the order of Walenty Aleksander Kalinowski a new, bigger castle and a collegium, a church of Jesuits, as well as a church with Dominican Order monastery were erected. As third one a Capuchin monastery was founded. The other huge development of the city falls onto the second half of the 19th century, together with building of railway connections, among others, to Odessa and Kiev.

From the times of greatness of the city come many beautiful buildings, who are well preserved to this day. Pay attention to the building of a local Duma from 1911, modernized premises of regional court, military barracks built in the last years of the 19th century or a post office from 1912.

Go to the Soborna 62 Street, where there is situated the Main Orthodox Church, built in 1897. Its construction was funded by a local merchant, Lifszyc. To this day the temple is called his name. With the coming of the 30’s of the 20th century, the church lost its significance. The club was set there, later a storage for clothes robbed from Jews, then a concert hall. The temple restored its lost glow only in the 90’s of the 20th century.

No one walks around hungry in Ukraine. Perfect, home cuisine is served by nearly every local restaurant. Just make sure to choose a place, whose specialty is local cuisine. Definitely taste Ukrainian borsch and pancakes with poppy. Get tempted also by potatoes bliny or caviar from pike. Or maybe you will try lard with… honey?

Though the city’s name suggests that wine is produced there, lovers of this liquor shouldn’t be prepared for degustation. Instead of local wines, in most restaurants there is served exquisite, Georgian wine.

On a market make sure to buy “sało”, which is gently smoked, growing lard, for which the region is famous for. Popular are also pickled vegetables in all configurations, sold straight from barrels.
