What’s worth seeing in Yerevan?

Yerevan – the capital and the biggest city of Armenia. It is also one of the oldest constantly inhabited city in the world – people has been living there ceaselessly since 782 year B.C.! Today it is an industrial and cultural centre of the country, which is gaining more and more interest among tourists.

What is Yerevan like? Original. And not big. Comparing to European capitals it is a small city, which can be sightseen on foot. To get to know the whole city in calm pace you need two-three days. In the very centre you will see a vast Republican square, on which in the evenings locals and tourists are meeting, there are nice, colourful fountains there. It is looking especially charming after twilight. Impression makes also monumental buildings from rock sand  – museums, hotels, headquarters of ministries. Architecture of the city’s centre is in huge contrast with surrounding it blocks of flats and houses, which have seen the better days, if we assume they ever had such at all.

Being there, you can feel a bit like you have come back to the past. Cars, that long ago stopped driving on European streets, are still present and quite numerous. Near the aforementioned Republican square, you can see a town market, where locals make shopping, whereas you can witness Yerevan’s vibe. You can buy there souvenirs, hand-made things and clothes.

Go to urban Cascades. It is a complex built on a slope of the hill, located north of the city’s centre. These are huge, white steps, surrounded by fountains and greenery. If you go to their peak, you will see Yerevan’s panorama, and during not cloudy days you will even notice a summit of the volcano range Ararat.

The culture of feasting outside house is becoming more common in Yerevan. To taste local dishes, go for instance to Yerevan tavern at 91 Teryan or to a restaurant Lavash at 21 Tumanyan. From a vast range of beers, produced in local breweries, famous is a pub Dargett at 72 Arami. If you prefer instead to try wined in spot where there is a plenty of their choice, step by In Vino Yerevan at 6 Saryan.
