What’s worth seeing in Sibiu?

Sibiu – Sybin – is     the historic city located in the middle part of Romania, at the foot of Fagaras Mountains, in Transylvania. The city is situated around 200 kilometres from Bucharest. Nearby there is Păltiniș – the most popular ski centre in Romania due to is location high in the mountains and surrounding beautiful nature.

Nicolae Ceaușescu planned to destroy the city during his dictatorship, in the year 1989. His decision was explained by him by the fact that the city was founded by Saxon colonists and as a creation of German culture, it shall be destroyed. Luckily, Ceaușescu’s plans were never brought to life.

Today Sybin is one of the biggest cultural centre of the country. While staying there, be sure to visit the old town’s square – Piata Mare – and check how it feels like when town houses’ roofs are staring down on you. Yes, that’s correct! Windows in attics were designed in such way, that they look like buildings’ eyes, which makes a really great impression. Do you fancy having a coffee in the square’s neighbourhood? Go to Arhiva de Cafea Si Ceai at Strada Arhivelor 2. For those who are hungry we recommend visit in Hermania restaurant, located in the walking distance from the square (Strada Filarmonicii 2) and serving various dishes of European and also Romanian cuisine. If trying a delicious food in a great restaurant is a goal of its own for you while travelling, we have something special for you! Visit a spot, which is considered by locals and tourists alike as one of top eatery in Sibiu. It’s restaurant Crama Sibiul Vechi at Strada Ilarian Papiu Alexandru 3.

The whole city’s landscape can be admired from the top of Town Hall’s Tower – it is definitely worth it, as the city’s architecture looks splendid with mountains in the background. The upper town is connected to the lower by street with stairs, along which there are plenty of cafes. It is one of the most loveliest places in the city.
