Atlanta is the capital of the New South, a place to make business, a birthplace of Coca-Cola, but most of all a home for ethnically various migrant population. The city offers a lot of touristic attractions, exquisite regional cuisine, vibrant night life and cosmopolitan mood.
The capital of Georgia, Atlanta is nowadays one of the most important business centre in the US. Companies like Coca-Cola, Cartoon Network, CNN, UPS or Delta Air have their headquarters in Atlanta. On the crossroads of express routes I-20 and I-75, there is the Downtown district, in which breath-taking skyscrapers made of glass and steel were erected. The highest building is Bank of American Plaza with height of 312 metres, and the second highest is SunTrust Plaza, 265 metres high. It is definitely worth going there just to see this monumental architecture and feel the business vibe.
Atlanta is the seventh most visited city by Americans in the US, as it offers many touristic attractions. One of the spots you have to see is Atlanta History Center, in which open for visitors are not only exhibitions, interactive attractions, but also reconstructed old buildings and gardens. Another must-see is the family home of Martin Luther King, who in the 60.’s of the 20th century from there was leading a citizens’ right movement for equal treatment of Afro-Americans and the abolition of race discrimination. You will find it by Auburn 449 Avenue. If you are fan of “Gone with the wind”, you can’t miss a visit in a museum located in the house of novelist Margaret Mitchell at Crescent 979 avenue. It is also worth visiting the Civil War Museum that shows the history of the battle for Atlanta.
While in Georgia, you have to try juicy peaches, sweet onion Vidalia and nuts pecan, which are added to most of regional dishes. Especially worth recommending are peaches in pie, on flat-pie or barbecued, served with vanilla ice-creams, as well as corn bread or fried chicken with black-eyed peas, cooked corn, collard or mustard greens or mashed potatoes. For dessert order pecan pie, a tart with pecan nuts, together with sweet tea. Where to go to eat? Definitely to Mary Mac’s Tea Room, where menu is full of local dishes, and also Bone’s Restaurant or McKendrick’s Steak House, where you can try delicious steak. Tasty dishes of seafood you can eat in The Oceanaire or Kimball House’s Oysters.
