While in Kavala, it is worth going on a trip to the nearby island of Thassos. Ferries regularly sail for it, courses take place to Skala Prinos five times a day and last just over an hour.
During your stay on the island of Thassos, be sure to look for the local delicacy. Excellent honey, produced on the spot, is sold at every step and in every form!
About 40 kilometres from Kavala is the beautiful Pangajon mountain range. According to a legend, the Dionysus oracle was supposed to be at its peak, that was – as were convinced the inhabitants of northern Greece – equal to the Delphi one.
Kavala is a city located in northern East part of the Continental Greece, in a region of East Macedonia and Thrace. Situated at the Aegean Sea, opposite Thassos island, it is one of the most important port city in the country. It is beautifully located on the slope of the mountain Simbólon, and its history made it a place influences by Greek, Roman and Byzantium cultures.
As the most beautiful district of Kavala is considered the Panagia, whose buildings remember the times of the 18th and 19th centuries. Look for a very well-preserved, popular Turkish home in which Muhammad Ali supposedly was born. Also see there other landmarks, such as the Byzantine citadel and almost a three-hundred-meter aqueduct, built on the order of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, who was ruling in the 16th century.
Above the town dominates a castle built on the Panagia hill. To reach it from the center you will only need twenty minutes of leisurely walk. The view from the castle tower to the town and the sea stretching all the way to the horizon is fantastic and definitely worth the several dozen-minute trip up the hill. When climbing, it's worth getting lost somewhere in the narrow streets to feel the best the surrounding vibe.
Staying on the Aegean Sea, you must try local seafood or other typical dishes. Where is it worth to go? One of the most popular restaurants is Balaouro at 19 Thassou (Limanaki Sfageion). It is famous for excellent clams, prawns and excellent fresh salads. You can also expect great Greek cuisine accompanied by delicious wine and music in Sousouro at 4 Agiou Nikolaou. Still lacking recommendations? Another place with regional dishes, which will certainly prove to be a hit, is Psaraki at Ethnikis Antistaseos 3.
