What’s worth seeing in Kefalonia?

Kefalonia, the biggest Island of the archipelago of the Ionic Islands, located in the Gulf of Patras. First people settled there already 5 thousand years ago. The most interesting object found on the island is a tomb from around 1300 year B.C., in which kings and senior state clerks were buried.

The heart of the island beats in Argostoli, a capital located in the picturesque bay. Take a walk around the buzzy port and imagine how life used to look like here back in the day. There are a few museums worth your attention. Tourists eagerly choose Argostoli due to the closeness of perfect, sandy beaches – Makris Gialos and Platis Gialos.

Staying in Kefalonia, you have to go for at least one trip – it is a cruise by boat to the cave Melisani. The ancient place of cult for centuries has not been visited by a man. Only an earthquake in the 50s of the 20th century caused slide of rock, that unearthed an amazing cave. The view is simply fairytale-like – a flick of light entering the cave through a hole in the ceiling, falls straight onto the salty lake, that changes color to willow-green one.

The same earthquake has destroyed many buildings on an island. There is though one village, that survived almost intact. Got to Fiscardo, a port village located on the northern East shore of the island. You will see their Venetian townhouses from the 12th century, eat a delicious dinner in one of the tiny restaurants in narrow streets, and spend an evening in one of the noisy bars.

Kefalonia is not only a charming Greek Island with delicious food, monuments, and museums. If you miss some adrenaline or at least activity, you are in the perfect spot. Fans of diving will find the best conditions to do that sport in Agia Efimia or Fiscardo. If you prefer kitesurfing or windsurfing, try some of the beaches on the eastern shore. And maybe you fancy some canoeing on the sea? In port cities without problems, you will find travel agencies organizing such trips.
