    Karlsruhe is called by citizens the fan-shaped city – Fächerstadt. The name originates from regular, radiative design of streets, stretching out from a palace of a margrave of Baden-Durlach, Charles III William.

    The city was founded by a margrave of Baden-Durlah, Charles III William and was supposed to be his retreat from everyday life. That’s where the city’s name comes from, as it literally means the Charles’ retreat.

    The closest airport, Baden Airpark, is located 40 kilometres from the city. During week, you can get from it to the centre of Karlsruhe by bus, but it is good to know that it doesn’t run on weekends.

What’s interesting to see in Karlsruhe?

Karlsruhe is a city located in southwest Germany, around 20 kilometres from the border with France. It belongs to the state Baden-Württemberg. One of the most recognisable building of the city is the Palace Karlsruhe. Erected in 1715, nowadays it serves as headquarters of two most important courts in the country – the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice.

Karlsruhe had its most difficult time at the end of the Second World War, when as a result of allies’ operations, most of the old town’s buildings were destroyed. After the war, the city was rebuilt, and today it is famous for its academic facilities. It has the oldest technical university in Germany, currently named Karlsruher Institut für Technologie. In the city there is also situated the smallest German university – the Academy of Fine Arts, which is considered to be one of the most prestigious schools of this type in the whole country.

While in Karlsruhe, go to the main square, where there is a pyramid with a tomb of a founder of the city, Charles III William, inside. In the city centre, you will find plenty of restaurants, among others the one specializing in German cuisine - EigenArt (Hebelstrasse 17), considered to be one of the best in the city according to tourists. If you are more into grilled dishes, go to Bratar at Erbprinzenstrasse 27. Also lovers of Asian cuisine will find something for them in the city centre – at Kaiserstrasse 114 there is a restaurant called Yangda, which additional trump is the fact it has vegetarian dishes in the menu.

If you like to admire cities in their full beauty – Karlsruhe won’t disappoint you. To see the city’s nearby rivers panorama, go to Turmberg - a hill located in the suburbs. Apart from beautiful views, you will also find there ruins of a castle.
