Puerto Montt wasn’t not taken over by Germans in forays. Manuel Montt, who was a president of the country in that times, was inviting immigrants from Europe and facilitating their settlement. The city was named after him.

What’s worth seeing in Puerto Montt?

A Chilean port city situated by the gulf Ancud, established in 1853 at the foot of two volcanoes – Osorno and Calbuco. First citizens from Europe, that settled in, were Germans. Before the second half of the 20th century whole this area was covered in dense forest, in local language was called Melipulli, meaning four hills.

Despite its interesting history, in Puerto Montt there are not preserved many buildings from the first period of the city’s history. Both an old port, as well as a railway station and many offices, residential buildings were demolished during an earthquake in 1960. The city was rebuilt according to new trends in architecture.

But what is really fascinating in Puerto Montt, is nature. Plan a trip to the Natonial Park Alerce Andino, where you will walk in deep valleys full of larch forests flanked by huge mountains. We especially recommend a view for lake Chapo and valleys of rivers Chaicas and Lenca. During your expedition you can meet local animals. If you love nature, there is no point staying just one day. Better book an overnight stop in hostel located in the park.

What would a journey be without souvenirs? 3 kilometres north from the city’s centre visit a village,
Angelmó, and in it local market with craft, where you can buy hand-made vessels, bags, jumpers, blankets and other household appliances. Just close by, at the end of the same road, there is situated a fish market. Residents are shopping there for fresh fishes from morning catch. If you don’t have where to prepare them, don’t worry – on a few stalls you can buy ready-to-eat grilled and smoked snacks.

You will fall in love in Puerto Montt cuisine. As a port city, it has a lot to offer. Local fishes and seafood have no equals anywhere else, and local chiefs mastered their preparation. Try two in one – exquisite cuisine and a view for the volcano Calbuco. In local restaurants try paila marina, stew with seafood. Another interesting dish is cancato – stew from fishes, chorizo, cheese and tomatoes.
