Right in the middle of Turkey, at the foot of Mount Erciyes, lies the city of Kayseri. It was initially known as Mazaca and then renamed in 17 AC Caesarea in Cappadocia in honor of Caesar Tiberius. 
Many türbes – traditional Seljuq mausoleums – have been preserved in the area of Kayseri. Among the most famous is Hasbek Kümbeti, which dates back to 1186, and the nearby 14th-century mosque, Hasbek Kümbet Camii. The building is quite unique as it doesn’t resemble the typical mosque with minarets. This one, instead, draws parallels with Romanesque Architecture – has a rectangular ground plan and a flat roof, and was built with stone blocks. And looks pretty unusual being surrounded by modern apartment houses.

When you’re visiting Kayseri, take a trip to any of the underground cities of Kaymakli and Derinkuyu. They were used by early Christians to hide from their Roman and Muslims enemies. In Derinkuyu, there’re several well-maintained rock-cut rooms, e.g., stables, cellars, wineries, refectories, and even churches. Kaymakli city consists of 8 underground levels (4 are open to the public).

If you want to buy some souvenirs, go to the Grand Bazaar situated not far from the Great Mosque. It’s hard to believe that this market district is almost 800 years old! Covered by the roof, this maze of lanes and stalls is not just a tourist attraction, but a regular marketplace visited every day by the locals. As a result, not only can you get anything you want but also you’ll be happy to pay non-tourist prices. Bring home some pastirma (air-dried beef), the famous product of the city.

Dalaman is a small town situated in a district of the same name, within the Muğla Province in the south-west of Turkey. It became well-known in the late 1980s when international airlines started operating at the local airport. Currently, it handles over 4 million passengers per year with flights from and to over 100 destinations in the world. Even though most of the travelers head to larger resorts right after the arrival, it’s worth spending also a day touring Dalaman.

Turkish Aegean Riviera where Dalaman sits is exceptionally picturesque. It’s the result of its location between the sea and the mountains. The town itself is very enjoyable and typical for the Mediterranean region. Take a walk along its coast – wonderful marine scenery that Riviera is famous for is definitely worth admiring. The shoreline is rugged and hides lots of lagoons and coves which makes it even more beautiful.

Visit one of the beaches in the area, such as vast and sandy Sarigerme. It’s sited just a 15-minute car ride away from the town. After a day of sunbathing, you can have an evening meal in one of the nearby eateries.

Having more than 1,6 million citizens Adana is one of the biggest city of Turkey and the oldest town constantly populated in the world. Though nowadays it seems like a modern city, tourists are attracted by its ancient roots and history.

The main attraction of the city is mosque Sabanci Merkez Camii, which intimidates with its size and splendour. This modern, as it was opened in 2008, building has a capacity of 20 thousand people. This place is worth visiting both during days, to admire the craft of embellishments, and nights, when its six minarets are beautifully floodlit. The mosque is surrounded by neat, 33 hectares green area called the Central Park, in Turkish: Merkez Park. It is the favourite place of citizens of Adana looking for cooling during heats.

The must-see building in the centre is also a stone bridge Taşköprü by the river Seyhan. It dates back to the ancient Roman times. Until 2007 cars were allowed there, now vehicles are prohibited. In the old part of Adana cosy streets are dominating with many mosques located by them. The ones to mention among them are Ulu Camii, a great mosque with 32-metres high clock tower, the highest in Turkey and Ağca Camii – the oldest sanctuary of Adana. This neighbourhood is also famous for trade, so you will find there numerous markets, shops and street stalls.

Adana can boast the best recipe for kebab in Turkey.  Adana Kebab, or Adana Kebabı ,  Kıyma Kebab, is chopped, grilled, spicy lamb meat served with grilled vegetables on pida, which is a sort of pie, similar to pizza, in a shape of boat. Where you can eat truly tasty food? For sure in bar Kazım Büfe at Cemalpaşa Mahallesi St., in Birbiçer Kebap Salonu at Hanedan Mahallesi St. and in Kebapçı Şeyhmus at Tepebağ Mahallesi St. If you like to experiment, ask for şalgam, a drink made of fermented black carrots. When you fancy desert, order halvah, as the Turkish one is considered the best in the world.

The origins of Trabzon go back to the 1st century BC when the settlers from Miletus founded the city of Trapezous. It was located along the historical Silk Road that brought goods, such as the precious fiber, paper, and iron from China through the Middle East to Europe (and gold, perfumes, and grapes in the opposite direction). Even though Trabzon is still one of the most important transportation centers in this part of Turkey and an important Black Sea port, it has lost its former glory.

If you like relaxing in the middle of nature, visit one of the urban beaches or climb Boztepe hill, dominating over the city (get there by foot or by bus – dolmuş). Not only can you admire a spectacular panorama of Trapezous and the seashore, but you’ll also find a range of eateries with local snacks (such as corn), delicious Rize tea, e.g., from the samovar, and water pipes, as well as a little bazaar with inexpensive souvenirs. Particularly impressive is the view of the sunset and the city coming to life at dusk. In the evening, head to the boardwalk running along the shore. At night it fills up with people. There are also teashops and restaurants serving fish dishes, typical for the region.

Trabzon is situated on the coast of the Black Sea which is rich in fish. Therefore, the local cuisine differs from the rest of the country. The high rainfall enables the farmers to grow, i.e., corn – a traditional culinary staple, while the Black Sea provides a variety of delicious fish, which is the basis of the local diet. Among the most popular species are sturgeons (mersin balığı), turbots (kalkan), and European anchovies (hamsi) that is widespread and easy to be found on every street corner. They’re served fried or braised but also can be used to make other traditional dishes, such as pilaf, pide, omelets, and güveç.

In the ancient Times on the area of today’s Gazipaşa, there was a settlement called Sallune or Selinus, in which Roman emperor Trajan was killed. The oldest traces indicated that the settlement was existing around 2000 year B.C, but it is assumed that due to perfect conditions for cultivation, people had to sue these soils much more before. We know that there was a trading route going from there to Cyprus, and in the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. Sallune was conquered by Romans.

After those Times there are left a few interesting monuments – a part of aqueduct, a symbolic tomb commemorating the death of Trajan, that formerly used to be composed of a temple and a tomb. Nearby there are preserved two Roman baths – bigger and smaller one and agora. Minor archaeological findings from the area of Sallune can be found in the museum in neighbouring Alanyi.

Since 2011, when the airport was built here, the calm, agriculture town has been changing into the popular tourists resort. Still the area is covered by huge cultivable fields. On the lane alongside the shore you can see growing citruses and bananas. Don’t be surprised by seeing greenhouses that are needed even in the sunny Turkey. Mainly strawberries are cultivated in them.

On a colder day take a walk to uniquely picturesque port, in which a few dozens of motorboats and smaller boats are berthed. And if the sun is shining, you would certainly want to lie on the nearby sandy beach with a view for the beautiful mountain range. If you like to dive, you can be interested by an underwater trip to caves.

Turkish  love to eat and feed others, that is why in almost every restaurant, which you enter, you will get tasty, local dishes. The city of Antakya – named “Hatay” by Turks – is pulsing with rather Arabic than Turkish atmosphere. At every turn, you can feel the influence of Middle Eastern culture, but also of Christianity, as Antakya used to be a significant religious center.

In the Roman times, Antakya was the third largest city in the ancient world. Unfortunately, there's not much left from that period, because in the 6th century the city had been affected by the large earthquake. What you can see today is, e.g., one of the five formerly existing bridges on the Orontes River as well as absolutely beautiful mosaics dating back to between the 2nd and 4th centuries. They are exhibited in the Hatay Archeology Museum (Arkeoloji Müzesi) which is one of the city’s biggest attractions. Turkish museum houses the second richest collection of mosaics in the world (the first one is in Ravenna).

Your “must-see list” of Antakya should include The Cave Church of Saint Peter (Aziz Petros Kilisesi), situated just about 2.5 km from the city center. You can walk there or go by car or bus. According to tradition, St. Peter (and St. Paul after him) preached Christianity in this very place. Interestingly, the grotto – dating back to the Byzantine times – in the 11th century was rebuilt by Crusaders. They constructed a Gothic facade, so today, instead of just a cave, we can admire the church carved into the rock.

The region borders Syria, and it’s easy to notice that Arabic culture had a strong impact on architecture or cuisine of Antakya. To indulge in the local atmosphere, walk down the narrow streets with stalls and Arabic signboards and then head for the city’s major mosques – the Great Mosque (Ulu Camii) and Habib-i Neccar Camii which is the oldest Muslim temple in the region. If you like Middle-Eastern cuisine, you won’t be disappointed here – you can taste local dishes flavored with fresh mint or chickpea-based specialties (e.g., hummus) as well as traditional herbed cheese, yogurt-based soups, and kebabs. And if you are a dessert lover, you should definitely try kunefe – you won’t regret it!
