Founders of Faro, a seaside town, were perfectly aware how important to it was existence of a lighthouse, that is why naming it, they chose a word “lighthouse”.
Staying there, make sure to try local seafood, especially shellfish and oysterfish… What’s interesting, mollusc of that type, fished at Faro, make up for 90% of all catches on Portugal!
Faro is situated in Algarve, a region in the southern part of Portugal. You will see there lovely city’s centre, as well as sandy beaches and charming lagoons, that attracts each year many tourists. Taking into account that average temperature during year doesn’t fall below 16 Celsius degrees, one shouldn’t be surprised by popularity of this town.
The most beautiful district is Cidade Velha, almost entirely separated from the rest of the town with walls. You can move around there only on foot, and architecture is very diversified due to an earthquake that happened in the 18th century. You can see there small houses, huge, dated back to 19th century residences and modern villas, and such eclecticism makes that place really special.
Dominating colour is white, that covers most of buildings, there are plenty of cosy, small streets, through which you would want to wander for hours. One of the most interesting elements of architecture are two buildings – located in the centre cathedral (unique as it mixes styles of baroque, Renaissance and gothic) and a true pearl of baroque art – a chapel Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, with golden and marble parts.
When you want to rest, go to cafe, sit outside and observe life of this calm, charming town. Where to go to eat something? Very popular is Tasca do Ricky at Rua do Forno 21, a restaurant specializing in Portuguese cuisine. Another place, which you will leave satisfied and filled, is Portas de São Pedro at Rua de Sao Pedro. We especially recommend getting there seafood.
Fancy some rest by the water? You will find fantastic, sandy beaches in a distance of around 7 kilometres from the centre, and you can reach them by bus or bike, that you can rent easily on the spot. If you want to get a bit further – get on boat or ship, that goes to the calm beach Praia da Ilha do Farol, located on an island.
