Colombo
Colombo, the largest city in Sri Lanka, is an important economic and cultural centre. Known in the Middle Ages as Kalantota, it was the capital until 1982. Today it has around 318,000 inhabitants, including Sinhalese, Moors and Tamils. In the city you will see the remains of Portuguese, Dutch and British fortifications, the National Museum and Buddhist temples such as Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara. The tropical climate makes December to March the best time to visit Colombo, when the weather is dry and warm.
