Oviedo
Oviedo, the historic capital of Asturias, lies in northern Spain between the Bay of Biscay and the Cantabrian Mountains. Founded in 761, the city is known for the Gothic Cathedral of San Salvador and for numerous pre-Romanesque monuments such as the churches of Santa María del Naranco and San Miguel de Lillo. It is also an industrial centre with well-developed metallurgy and machinery production. The temperate climate makes spring and summer good times to visit. Oviedo is the birthplace of Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso.
