Libya, located in North Africa along the Gulf of Sidra, shares borders with Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia. The capital city is Tripoli. Most of the country is covered by the Sahara and Libyan Deserts, dotted with oases. The climate is predominantly arid and subtropical, shifting to a Mediterranean pattern along the coast. Libya is famous for recording a temperature of 57.8 °C in Al-Aziziyah, one of the highest ever measured. Rainfall is scarce and there are no permanent rivers. Tripoli and Benghazi are especially pleasant to visit in spring, when temperatures are milder.
