Shannon Town is located in County Clare in the south west of Ireland. It takes its name from the river upon which it sits. Shannon is relatively new; it was founded in 1960, yet it was not until 1982 that the town was granted a charter.
The population started to grow rapidly due to construction of the airport, which is now the third largest in Ireland, measured by passengers served. The construction workers building the airport, as well as its personnel, were among the first residents of Shannon. Along the way, other companies were set up here, bringing in more and more people.
Around 10 kilometers away from the city, the Bunratty Castle is located. It’s a spectacular 15th-century tower house which attracts many tourists. No less beautiful is the Dromoland Castle, situated at almost the same distance from Shannon, by the pond. It used to be the residence of the O’Brien dynasty and then has been transformed into a hotel. You would definitely enjoy your stay here.
The river that gives the city its name is the longest one in the country. It’s surrounded by lakes and mountains and provides fantastic conditions for fishing. If you like to rest in nature, don’t hesitate to give this activity a try – you’ll get a chance to catch, e.g., a salmon. You might also be interested in kayaking along the Shannon and explore the region from this perspective. Not far from the town, the river enters the Atlantic Ocean, revealing a magnificent view. It’s worth taking a walk to admire the beauty of Irish nature.
In Shannon, you’re only 20 kilometers from the place known for excellent food. It refers to the Milk Market in Limerick, which lies not far off the town. It’s here that local food producers and farmers sell their goods, such as cheese, fish, and meat, especially ham. The best day to go there is Saturday. Concerning pubs and restaurants, there are a few in Shannon. The small restaurant recommended by travelers is called Rowan Berry. It’s at Ballycasey Crafts Centre and offers Irish cuisine. Another nice place – serving Indian food – is Bollywood Temple on B 32B Sky Court.
