Longyearbyen
Longyearbyen is the capital of Svalbard, a Norwegian territory on the island of Spitsbergen, set on the Adventfjorden bay. Around 2.5 thousand people live there, among them Norwegians, Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians. The town grew up as a coal mining centre and now serves as a hub for Arctic tourism. The best time to visit is summer, when temperatures range from 3 to 7 °C. Winter is far colder, and the polar night lasts from October to February, creating a unique atmosphere for nature lovers.
