Washington D.C., officially referred to as the District of Columbia, was founded on July 16th, 1790. It owes its name to President George Washington, the first president of the United States of America. The city is the capital of the USA and a center of federal power, and diplomatic missions and organizations, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund or the Pan American Health Organization, have their headquarters located there.
Located on the north bank of the Potomac River, Washington attracts hundreds of thousands of tourists each year. No wonder – this rich city offers visitors great monuments, the best museums, and excellent local cuisine.
The main attractions are located in the center of the area of The National Mall. There are, among others, Monuments of Washington, Lincoln, Einstein, veterans of the war in Korea and Vietnam, as well as the National World War II Memorial. In the eastern part, nineteen museums, or The Smithsonian, are available for free to sightsee. The most interesting ones include the Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of African Art, the National Museum of American History and the National Museum of American Indians. It is also worth visiting the historic Georgetown district, where you can see the oldest buildings of the District, such as the Old Stone House from 1765, as well as the exclusive part of the city, Kalorama, where you can admire beautiful villas, including the one of the former President Obama.
What is worth eating here? The region is famous for its crustacean dishes and oriental cuisine, mainly Vietnamese and Chinese. Among the local delicacies are reigning, among others, bánh mì sandwiches with vegetables and roasted duck breast, as well as meat chili, for e.g. Bill Cosby's Original Half Smoke, or beef and pork sausage with a bread roll, mustard, onion, and spicy homemade chili sauce. Must try also oysters, crabs (for e.g. crabcakes – fried biscuits with crab meat), and boiled lobsters. Where to eat? Interesting spots are located in the Shaw district and in Adams Morgan. We recommend, for example, Bar Dupont, Legal Sea Foods, Farmers Fishers Bakers.
