Kiel
Kiel, the capital of Schleswig-Holstein, lies on the Kiel Fjord in the south-western Baltic. This port city of 246 thousand inhabitants is one of Germany's principal harbours. It is home to the entrance of the Kiel Canal, which links the Baltic with the North Sea. The historic Kieler Umschlag fair and the university founded in 1665 are both well worth a visit. In summer temperatures reach 20°C, making this the ideal season to come.
