What’s worth seeing in Nevşehir?
Nevşehir is a city located in the middle Turkey, in the province of the same name. The land, in which it is situated, is considered one of the most beautiful in the country. We speak of Cappadocia, which is the miracle of nature, that covers around 600 square kilometres. Its terrains are characteristic due to unusual landform, often called lunar.
Proof of Nevşehir beauty is most of all its rich history, whose traces are still visible there. In the closest neighbourhood there are so called underground cities, like Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı, in which first Christians were hiding from persecutions. First of them, whose the old name was Melengübü, is the biggest spot of that kind in Cappadocia. What is interesting, archaeologists believe that many underground cities still remain uncovered.
Nevşehir is famous for vessels from red clay, used for preparation of food. The most famous dish, made in such way, is Güveç, a kind of gratin, whose base is often meat, though it happens that it is seafood. The dish is served in the same vessel, that can keep the temperature for long time, be careful then not to get burnt! The region obviously worked out its own version of traditional, Turkish kebab – kiremit kebabı. In this version, meat is served on tray from clay, with addition of garlic and chili.
You are certainly interested what restaurants are worth visiting in Nevşehir. One of the most popular places, specializing in Turkish cuisine, is Avanos Kadın Girişimciler Kooperatifi at Yukarı Mahallesi, Vatan Caddesi.
