The name of the gold-rich province of Gauteng means "place of gold" in Sotho. This local term comes from the Dutch word for gold, or "goud".

  • Burned meat

In addition to the braais, the residents also eat very hard-baked shisa nyama, whose name from the Zulu language is translated as "burn meat".

What’s worth seeing in Lanseria?

Lanseria is an international airport about 30 km north of Johannesburg – the largest city in South Africa. Although the rich province of Gauteng is a modern and strongly urbanized region, Lanseria is a great base to set up a safari and get to know the true African nature.

In the 19th century, the Dutch discovered gold in the southern part of Africa, which contributed to the strong expansion and dynamic development of these areas. The region soon became the largest gold producer in the world. With the development of the province, there was also a need for better communication and infrastructure. In 1972, the construction of the airport in Lanseria, located among arable fields and the natural landscape of South Africa, was started.

What is worth seeing there? Certainly the area north of Johannesburg, where there is, among others, a botanical garden Walter Sisulu with over 220 species of birds. Must see is also the cradle of humanity, i.e. Cradle of Humankind, which is a huge complex of limestone caves, where the first traces of humanoids were found. Also of interest is the Cultural Village of Lanseria, a place where we will encounter the culture and traditions of the people living in the province of Gauteng. It is also worth visiting the impressive zoo in Johannesburg or go on safari to the Broederstroom nature reserve or the rhinoceros reserve located several kilometers from Lanseria.

What flavors are typical of Lanseria? Local cuisine is a combination of traditional South African dishes with Dutch, French or Indian cuisine. For the snack, it is best to choose biltong, i.e. thin slices of dried beef or venison seasoned with vinegar, salt, and spices. For the main course, you can choose boerewors, i.e. fried beef and spicy sausage or braais – grilled meat. The addition to meat is chakalaka or pap. The first is a dish of onions, tomatoes, peppers, carrots, beans, and spices, often served cold, and the other is white corn. A typical dish for the region is grilled meat. Where to eat? We recommend, among others, Bellgables Country Restaurant, The Fat Olive, and Maggies Farm.
