Amsterdam
Amsterdam, the constitutional capital of the Netherlands, lies in the province of North Holland on the Amstel and IJ rivers and a network of 160 canals, which has earned it the nickname Venice of the North. The city, with over 800 thousand inhabitants, is an important centre of culture and learning with two universities and numerous museums such as the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Its temperate climate, with mild winters (2-6 °C) and warm summers (17-22 °C), makes spring and summer the ideal time to visit.
