Ankara
Ankara, the capital of Turkey since 1923, lies in central Anatolia at 938 m above sea level. It is the country's second largest city after Istanbul. It sits on the Ankara Çayı river, in the driest region of Turkey, surrounded by steppes. Ankara is an important commercial, industrial and political centre, home to the government and to foreign embassies. It is known for breeding Angora animals and for producing pears, honey and grapes. Numerous archaeological sites from various eras have been uncovered in the surrounding area. The best time to visit is spring and autumn, when temperatures are moderate.
