Alexandria
Alexandria, Egypt's second-largest city, lies on the Mediterranean and is the country's biggest port. It is home to more than 4 million people. The city was founded by Alexander the Great in 332 BC, and its history reaches back even further, to the ancient settlement of Rhakotis. Alexandria is an important cultural and academic centre, with the University of Alexandria operating since 1942. Its Mediterranean climate brings mild winters and hot summers, and the best time to visit is spring and autumn.
