Germanwings, headquartered in Cologne, is a German carrier founded in 1997 as a low-cost division of Eurowings. It became an independent company in 2002. In 2008, Lufthansa came up with the idea to merge Eurowings, Germanwings and TUIfly to establish a company that would be a direct competitor to Air Berlin, Ryanair and easyJet. The plans, however, did not materialise - instead, in 2009, Lufthansa acquired Germanwings from Eurowings. Since 2015, the low-cost carrier has been existing under the Eurowings brand. According to the Germanwings baggage policy, hand baggage may not be heavier than 8kg and larger than 55 x 40 x 23 cm. Folding garment bags are considered hand baggage up to a size of 57 x 54 x 15 cm. Up to 10 liquids may be carried on board in 100 ml or 100 g containers. Registered baggage can weigh up to 23kg or 32kg and measure up to 157 centimetres.
