Heraklion International Airport is the main airport on the Greek island of Crete and one of the largest airports in Greece. The airport is located approximately 5 km east of the center of Heraklion. The patron of the airport is the Greek writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis. The airport was opened in 1939 for the first time. During the Second World War it suspended operation and started it again in the autumn of 1946. At first, the airport was very primitive. The first terminal was founded in 1947 and it was modernized in the 1950s. At the turn of the 1960s and 1970s, the runway was widened and a new terminal and other facilities were built. The opening of the new port was inaugurated on 5 May 1972. It has one terminal and two runways. The airport serves regular carriers as well as low-cost airlines offering domestic and international flight connections. It serves over 6 million passengers a year. There are many hotels in the city of Heraklion.
