Kota Kinabalu has only recently become known (precisely since 1968) under its current name. Earlier it was called Jesselton and it was destroyed twice during the Second World War.
If you wish to move around the city by public transport, what we do recommend, you must be patient. The bus will run only when sitting and standing places are full, and it will move quite slowly.
When it the city, going to Kinabalu Mount is a must. Actually, it's the National Park located at the bottom of Kinabalu. It is famous all over the world for the amazing diversity of plants and animals.
Kota Kinabalu is a Malaysian city, located in the north-western part of Borneo, the second largest on the island. It is the capital of the state of Sabah, located on the coast of the South China Sea. Also known as KK, it is a perfect place to start exploring this amazing corner of the world.
What is the way to get to know this city best? Try not to be a typical tourist, taking photos of everything you can. Try to make friends with the local population. Walk slowly around the city squares, chat with taxi drivers, watch the sunsets shoulder to shoulder with the locals, finally – visit one of the unusual bars with them.
You will also feel the atmosphere of the city by going to one of the markets. There is a fish market here, with great fresh products that you can also try on the spot, the Filipino market held every night, as well as a weekly market, taking place every Sunday.
There is one place that all tourists visit, and which, despite what we've said earlier, we recommend it for you to see. It is a city mosque, one of the most majestic buildings in all of South Asia. It is located near the bay, on its waters you can see its reflection, giving the impression of floating on the surface. Nine to twelve thousand people may pray in this temple at once.
After sightseeing the city and making a decision to eat something, you will have a lot of places to choose from. And it doesn’t matter if you want to try local products, dishes from other regions of the world, you wish to focus on street food or visit a restaurant. One of the most popular places is Little Italy at the Capital hotel on Jalan Haji Saman, specializing in Italian cuisine. For Mexican dishes, visit El Centro on the same street (Jalan Haji Saman 32). If you want to try local meals, go to Kedai Kopi Yee Fung at Gaya 127.
